What better excuse than a PD day to gather up the kids and take off on a road trip. This time we headed not too far away, but to some places we’ve had on our list to check out. We headed up the Bruce Peninsula towards Lion’s Head. It was a good time to hit up some popular spots before the busy season starts.
First stop was Garden in Thyme Country Market. As luck would have it, Molly was preparing some goods for the Lion’s Head Farmers’ Market and we were able to snag a fresh strawberry-rhubarb pie right out of the oven, along with some butter tarts. The pie would be a nice treat with dinner this weekend, and the tarts, well they didn’t make it home. There was already much in bloom and many things to look at at this quaint little market, right off Highway 6.
On to the beautiful village of Lion’s Head. We parked at Lion’s Head Beach, just a short walk from downtown. We spent some time by the crystal blue-green waters, looking for the ‘Lion’s Head’, but had better luck finding it downtown. Many were already out and about the little town, enjoying the sun and the sights.
Our main objective of the day was to check out Aunt Donkey’s, a new Toy & Novelty shop, and it didn’t disappoint! Greeted with friendly staff, the store had an amazing selection of games, toys and trendy items - most we hadn't seen before. We left with some new board games, a glow in the dark fidget spinner and suckers with real crickets in them!
Next was a quick bite at Rachel’s Cafe & Bakery, but we couldn’t leave without one of her giant cookies!
Next on our list was The Dandy Lion. A shop chalk full of beautiful items, many that are unique to the Bruce Peninsula. We lucked out and grabbed a trendy Schitt’s Creek paddle, labelled ‘The Bruce’, along with a scented pottery candle and a good selection of teas.
We were already full from our many stops - but popped in to Marydale’s Restaurant to say ‘hello’.
After a little more time walking around and dipping our feet in the cool water down at the beach, we headed back towards Wiarton to grab some bbq essentials from Sullivan’s Butcher Shop and have a quick peek in Designs by Brenda (much more than a flower shop!
We figured that since we already blew our dinner, we might as well have an ice cream at Northern Confections and pick up some freshly-made Blood Orange Chocolate Crunchie Bark, infused with Southampton Olive Oil vinegar - yum!
Well stocked for the weekend, we headed home very full and with many great treasures! Couldn't have asked for a better day!
